MT ALEXANDER
ROAD
Okay, okay you got me, this was my personal home.
A stones throw away from the city, this apartment already had the essentials, but like most apartment living, space and storage were always at a premium. Every square metre mattered, and the brief was less about adding more, and more about making what was already there work harder.
But our brief was clear:
We need more storage, we needed spaces to be multifunctional for everyday living and entertaining whilst still being bright and open.
Keeping in mind that this wasn’t going to be our forever home and we would sell as some stage, we focused on smart, non-invasive moves. Okay maybe one invasive move.
We made it a one bedroom from a two bedroom. And if your thinking your crazy, your going to loose money doing that just like my mum thought. Well I’m here to tell you that you and her were wrong. So this is what we did:
Removing the second bedroom that had no external window and had second bedroom syndrome (the room that everything gets dumped into) allowed us to create a multifunctional living and dining space. It also allowed us to build in an integrated desk and walk-in robe providing generous storage that can be neatly closed away when it’s time to host. We also removed the existing desk allowing for a new built-in pantry and bookshelf, dramatically increasing storage without overwhelming the apartment.
A modern, minimal palette ties the apartment together. Engineered timber floorboards, a refreshed kitchen splashback and a fresh coat of paint bring a sense of cohesion and calm. Subtle details, including block-out blinds, a European laundry and a feature wall in the bedroom, add functionality without competing for attention.
The result is an apartment that feels more spacious, more organised and far more flexible. A home that supports day-to-day living, but easily shifts into an inviting space for entertaining, proving that good apartment design is all about thoughtful planning. And we even ended up selling it for the price of a 2 bedroom!
